Spring Into Summer the Smart Way: Why April, May, and June Are the Best Time for a Vasectomy

As the weather warms up in North Carolina, many men start thinking about summer plans—beach trips, pool days, vacations, and time off with family. But before the busy summer season hits, there’s a small window of opportunity in April, May, and June that can make a big difference in your experience with a vasectomy.

At His Choice Durham Chapel Hill, we often tell patients:

Spring is one of the best times of the year to get a vasectomy—and here’s why.

Plan Ahead Before Summer Gets Busy

Summer fills up fast—with travel, camps, and long weekends. Scheduling your vasectomy in April, May, or early June allows you to:

  • Recover before peak summer activity
  • Avoid conflicts with vacations and events
  • Get it checked off your to-do list while life is still a bit more predictable

Timing Matters: Think About Swimming Restrictions

One of the most important (and often overlooked) recovery tips:  No swimming for 5 days after your vasectomy.

That includes:

  • Pools
  • Lakes
  • The ocean

So if you have:

  • A beach trip planned
  • July 4th weekend plans
  • A family vacation coming up

You’ll want to schedule your procedure at least a week before those events—ideally earlier in the spring.

Patients Are Traveling Hundreds of Miles for Our Approach

We’ve recently had patients travel from:

  • Alabama
  • Upstate New York
  • Florida

Each of these men traveled over 500 miles, passing dozens of other providers, to come to His Choice.

Why?

Because of our minimally invasive, patient-centered approach:

  • No-needle anesthesia
  • No-scalpel technique
  • Single small skin opening
  • Efficient, streamlined visits -usually patients are in & out of the clinic in 60 min
  • For most men, there is no need for a consultation visit (but if you would like one, you can schedule that too)

For many men, it’s worth traveling for a better experience. And if you live in the area, consider yourself fortunate to be so close to this convenient opportunity.

And because a common question is about our cost, here our transparent cost structure.

Real Patient Experience (3+ Month Follow-Up)

Here’s what one of our recent patients shared after his procedure:

“Been 3+ months since the vasectomy with Dr. Zerden.
Procedure went great, a small moment of discomfort but the anesthetic worked quick. Didn’t feel like I was there for a long time at all, Dr. Zerden is really good at conversating during the procedure and keeping your mind elsewhere but also keeps you informed of what’s going on.

Healing was great too, no stitches no scalpel… just one small opening that closed up quick. Small pains here and there during the healing period when I got up or exerted myself but when I was resting there was rarely any, especially with painkillers. Today I experience 0 pain ever. I was quickly able to get back to my hobby of rollerskating and getting back to work.

Sperm test came back with no detections, I’m very glad I made this decision. Thank you Dr. Zerden!”

What to Expect

At His Choice Durham Chapel Hill:

  • Most men do not need a separate consultation visit
  • The procedure typically takes about 15 minutes, plan to spend about 1 hour with us
  • Recovery is usually quick, with most returning to normal activity within a few days

Don’t Wait Until Summer

Every year, we see a surge of patients in late June and July who say: “I wish I had done this earlier.” Or they have to skip out on a beach trip or jumping in the pool with their family. Don’t be that guy. Sign up and get it done now!

By planning ahead in April, May, or early June, you can:

  • Avoid recovery conflicts
  • Enjoy your summer without restrictions
  • Move forward with confidence

American Urological Association released new Vasectomy Guidelines

The AUA recently released updated vasectomy guidelines.

Don’t worry, we will do the work for you of summarizing these here. The bottom line is that the AUA recommends clinic follow the standard approach that His Choice has been doing for over a decade:

  • Offering local pain control with our no-needle approach;
  • Using minimally invasive techniques, including 1 opening (our rate of single incision is over 99%);
  • Offering a post-vasectomy semen analysis. We’ve always done this, but we have modernized our approach to use a off-site lab.
    • This benefits you as you collect the sample at home and mail it without the need for an embarrassing trip around town with your sample.
